What is a SIM Card?
A SIM, or Subscriber Identity Module, card is a small, removable smart card that is inserted into mobile devices like phones and tablets. When your phone has a SIM card inside, it can connect to the mobile network, which allows you to make calls, send messages, and use the internet on your phone. With a dual SIM phone, you can use two SIM cards simultaneously, making it a great option for users wanting to separate personal and business communications, and travelers who need access to both a local and international SIM.
To use your SIM, first determine what type of SIM your device uses.
Single SIM: Fits one SIM card.
Dual SIM: Fits two SIM cards.
Hybrid SIM: Fits one SIM card slot and a hybrid slot.
Things to Know: A hybrid slot offers the choice between a second SIM card or a microSD card for extra storage. Determine which option is best for your needs.
On most smartphones, you'll find the SIM card slot along the device's side or top edge. Use a SIM ejection tool (often provided with the device) or a paperclip to gently press into the pinhole, releasing the SIM tray for removal.
You can find out what type of SIM your device uses in various ways.
- Check the User Manual: The user manual that came with your device often contains information about the supported SIM card sizes.
- Visit the Manufacturer's Website: Go to the official website of your device's manufacturer and look for specifications or support sections.
- Check the SIM Card Tray: Look at the SIM card tray or memory card slot for signs indicating the supported sizes for each SIM. If it's labeled "SIM2," your device supports dual SIM cards. If it's labeled "SIM2 \ microSD," it's a hybrid slot that can accommodate either a second SIM card or a microSD card for expanded storage.
Enable a dual SIM on a Samsung Device
Step 1: Navigate to Settings > Connections
Step 2: Select SIM card manager
Step 3: Select the SIM card you would like to enable
Step 4: Toggle the switch under SIM 2 to activate the SIM card
Step 5: Name your SIM 2. You may want to name your SIM according to its function or location of use (e.g. Work SIM or Australia SIM). Once both SIMs have been activated, you can easily switch between them using the quick panel, the settings menu, or through the phone and message apps on your Android.
Things to Know: iPhones come with eSIM technology that enables dual SIM support but may not have a physical dual SIM tray. If you want to activate cellular service on an iPhone using an eSIM, contact a GTA representative to get set up.
